Uriel Pineda, son of Jesus and Flor Pineda, Watertown, was awarded the Morgan Turnquist Memorial “Warrior Scholarship” at the recent Academic Awards Night at Lakeside Lutheran High School.
Senior Pineda was presented the $500.00 scholarship by Ted Turnquist, father of a former Lakeside student. Also present was Ruth Hirschfeld, Director of Lakeside’s Extended Learning Center. Pineda intends to further his education at Madison College with a degree in interior design.
The “Warrior Scholarship” was established by the family of Morgan Turnquist, who would have been in the Lakeside Lutheran class of 2014, but died in 2013 after a 14-year battle with brain cancer. Her family emphasized the “warrior” qualities they saw in Morgan. The award reads in part, “Cancer was all Morgan ever knew, but she refused to let it define her. She maintained a positive attitude to the end. She rarely complained about her situation and stayed true to her family and friends and most importantly to her Lord. Morgan struggled most of her life, but never lost sight of her prize.” The scholarship is intended to reward a senior at Lakeside who exemplifies this Christian faithfulness and perseverance in the face of struggle.
