Lakeside Lutheran High School recognized outstanding student athletes at its spring academic awards night May 11. Seniors Hollie Doyle, daughter of Jeff and Heidi Doyle, Watertown, and Elijah Tesch, son of Peter and Dee Tesch, Sun Prairie, were honored as the school nominees for the 2016 WIAA Scholar Athlete awards in their respective genders, and seniors Meghan Pingel, daughter of Jim and Renae Pingel, Sun Prairie, and Blake Thiele, son of Matt and Peg Thiele, Oconomowoc, were honored as Warrior Athletes for the 2015- 2016 school year.

As a member school of the WIAA, Lakeside was one of more than 400 high schools statewide nominating more than 800 seniors, one male and one female, for the WIAA Scholar Athlete award. In order to be eligible, nominees need a GPA of at least 3.5 and must have earned at least four varsity letters. Warrior Athlete Awards are presented to a senior male and female who are chosen by the Lakeside athletic coaching staff based on their participation, sportsmanship, and excellence in athletics.

Both of the Lakeside Lutheran 2016 WIAA Scholar Athletes are in this graduating Academic Top 10, and both have earned six varsity letters. Hollie Doyle is the female selection for 2016, earning letters in basketball, golf and softball as a three-season athlete, all while maintaining a 3.857 GPA. Doyle was named to 2nd Team All-Conference for softball in 2014, and was voted Most Valuable Golfer by her teammates in 2015. She plans to attend Carroll University to pursue a doctorate in Opthamology. Elijah Tesch is this year’s male WIAA Scholar Athlete, lettering in cross country and track. He received 1st team All-Conference honors in Cross Country and was named honorary team captain in 2015. He will graduate with a 3.845 GPA and plans to attend Wisconsin Lutheran College to pursue a degree in animal science.

The Warrior Award is presented to one senior boy and girl for their contributions to the Lakeside Lutheran athletic program throughout their high school careers. The coaching staff-selected award considers participation, sportsmanship, and excellence in the area of athletics. Both Warrior Award winners were three-sport athletes for all of their years at Lakeside and both have received several post season honors in their sports.

Blake Thiele, the 2016 male Warrior Award winner, will graduate with eight varsity letters—3 in football, 2 in basketball, and 3 in track and field. Thiele was a 2nd team All-conference football defensive back in 2013 and 2015, and a 1st team selection wide receiver in 2015. In track as a junior he was 8th in state for high hurdles and made the All-Conference team. He will continue his studies at UW-LaCrosse, pursuing a degree in business.

Meghan Pingel received the 2016 female Warrior Athlete Award. She will graduate with 10 varsity letters for her efforts in volleyball, basketball and track and field. She has earned spots on All-Conference teams since her freshman year, culminating in Performer of the Year in the Capitol Conference for Track in both 2014 and 2015, as well as Conference Basketball Player of the Year in 2016. She has been instrumental in helping the girls track teams win conference championships with her hurdling, jumping and relay running, taking, among other accomplishments, record-setting state championships in 4×200 Relay in 2013, 2014 and 2015, and 100m High Hurdles in 2014 and 2015 (setting a state record at 14.96s in 2014).  Last fall she signed a letter of intent to play Division 1 college basketball at UW-Green Bay, where she will pursue a degree in Physical Therapy.
