Warrior signs to play D1 college golf

Lakeside Lutheran High School is pleased to announce that one of its seniors has signed a letter of intent to play Division 1 college golf next year.

SONY DSCLukas Heckmann, son of Matt and Amy Heckmann, Middleton, has signed to play for the  University of New Orleans, often referred to locally as UNO, a medium-sized, metropolitan, public research university located on the New Orleans lakefront, and a Division I member of the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association), competing in the Southland Conference.

Collegiate interest in Heckmann ramped up in June 2017 after he shot a 69/69 to win the Wisconsin PGA championship and qualify for nationals, but UNO was his own choice. In an interview, Heckmann said, “I love [New Orleans]. I wanted to play somewhere warm, and am a huge Saints fan. I was super-excited to hear back [from UNO] and eventually receive an offer from them in August. I went down to visit and it immediately felt like a great fit.”

“I am extremely excited to have Lukas join the Privateer program and pursue an engineering degree here,” says University of New Orleans Golf Coach Jeff Lorio. “Lukas comes to UNO with a resume that shows an understanding of what it takes to win—he has competed and won on the local, regional, state and national level. He has proven that he is a hard worker and has a strong desire to compete at the highest level. I truly believe that Lukas has a very high ceiling and we haven’t yet begun to see him reach his potential. On top of all that, Lukas is a tremendous young man and it has been an absolute pleasure getting to know him and his parents during the recruiting process. I cannot wait to have him here on campus in August.”

In his high school career, Heckmann has been a varsity golfer since his freshman year. He earned second-team All-Conference in 2016 and was awarded first-team All-Conference the past two years. In his sophomore year, he was awarded third-team All-State after finishing fifth in the D2 WIAA state tournament. Last spring he was named Capitol Conference Golfer of the Year, All-State Second-Team, Madison Area Player of the Year and was the WIAA D2 State Champion.

For the past two years, Heckmann has earned Academic All-State recognition as well; he will graduate in the Academic Top Ten in his Lakeside Lutheran class of 2019. He has also been a 4-year basketball athlete, a member of the National Honor Society, Math Team and Student Council.

Lukas Heckmann plays golf whenever he can, including this past fall at Montana’s first American Junior Golf Association tournament in Big Sky on Sept. 1-3, 2018, where, according to PGA Head professional at Big Sky, Mark Wehrman, “Eighty of the best junior golfers in the world competed over three days in a 54-hole stroke play format.”
