ACT exam results among highest in state

ACT Research Services of Iowa City, Iowa, recently released the ACT scores for the Lakeside Lutheran High School class of 2017.

Of the 93 members of the  2017 class, 87, or 94%, wrote the exam. Based on a 36-point scale, the composite score of these students was 23.9, above the state composite of 20.5 for almost 100% of students writing the exam statewide. This composite score keeps Lakeside Lutheran among the top 2% of over 460 high schools in the state, as reported by the Wisconsin Department of Instruction.

According to ACT Inc., the test is not an aptitude or IQ test, but directly related to what students have learned in high school courses. They use the results to predict college readiness. For that, 52% of Lakeside Lutheran test-takers met all four standards for college readiness in English Composition, Algebra, Social Science, and Biology. That is more than twice the state average of 25%. According to ACT research, students who meet these benchmarks are more likely to succeed in college and earn a degree than those who don’t. “It is the rigor of coursework—rather than simply the number of core courses—that has the greatest impact on ACT performance and college readiness,” the non-profit organization states.

“In addition to having higher average ACT scores than many local schools, the College Board stated that our composite percentage of students who are ‘college ready’ in four core subjects is more than double the state’s composite,” says Principal James Grasby. “This means that a majority of Lakeside graduates are very likely to earn a “B” or above in English Composition, Algebra, the Social Sciences, and Biology in college-level courses. This is a great testimony to God’s blessing on our students’ work.”

The ACT is a national college admission and placement examination that is used by more colleges than any other examination. Begun in 1959, more than 1.8 million students wrote the ACT last school year, including almost 67,000 students in Wisconsin. The ACT is a standard assessment for all 11th-graders in Wisconsin public high schools.

Lakeside Lutheran High School in Lake Mills is a ministry operated by a federation of 31 Lutheran congregations who are affiliated with the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod or the Evangelical Lutheran Synod. The school holds accreditation from the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI), a division of AdvancED. The girls representing Lakeside Lutheran at the 73rd session of Badger Girls State at UW-Oshkosh from June 19-24 are Mindy Meske, daughter of Jeff and Jayne Meske, Jefferson, and Katelyn Richter, daughter of Pete and Denise Richter, Watertown. All of this year’s nominees are members of the Lakeside Lutheran Chapter of the National Honor Society.

Badger State Reps 2016
Lakeside Lutheran has chosen its representatives for the 2016 Badger Boys and Girls State Conferences in June. The junior class reps are (L-R) Derek Gulrud, Katelyn Richter, Elliott Butler and Mindy Meske.

In addition to maintaining a GPA that has earned him high honors for each semester of high school and the Brewer/Journal-Sentinel Student Achievement award each spring, Elliott Butler has participated and led in three sports seasons, including football and baseball for three years and basketball for two years. He has participated in the Capitol Conference Math Meet and Student Council each year, as well as being on staff of the weekly student-run newspaper; he served as an editor during the 2015-16 year. In summer 2015, he was selected to participate in the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy. He participated in the inaugural year of Lakeside’s Operation GO, a summer mission trip group in which Butler’s group assisted with church activities in Louisville, KY; this summer he plans to participate at a church in Boise, ID.  In his home church, St. Matthew Ev. Lutheran in Oconomowoc, he regularly ushers and helps with VBS camps and the church’s Live Nativity. He also holds a job at the Piggly Wiggly in Oconomowoc.

In addition to being a part of the state championship Warrior Forensics team, where he earned a gold medal for playacting, Derek Gulrud has participated in choir his three years at Lakeside, including the audition-based traveling A Cappella Choir and the choreography-focused Swing Choir this junior year, where he is often a soloist. Gulrud has won roles in each spring drama and musical production. He has played on the football team for three years and track and field one year. He will also participate in his second year of Lakeside’s Operation GO summer mission trips, returning to a church in Toronto to help with summer camps. He ushers at St. John Lutheran in Waterloo, and serves as a worship leader, soloist and guitarist. Gulrud also works as a DJ for DJMagic Entertainment, and enjoys recording music at the studio he built at his home.

After two years in Freshman and Cantate choirs, Mindy Meske also sings in the A Cappella and Swing Choirs, where she often solos, as she also did for her role in this spring’s musical. She has earned a spot on academic honors or high honors each semester, and was awarded a Student Achiever Award. Her athletic involvement includes being goalkeeper on the varsity soccer team, and manager for the wrestling team. Meske was elected Secretary of the FFA Chapter for the past two years, and in her work with FFA, has been awarded a Leadership award, a Judging award, and a speech contest award. She also serves the audio/visual needs for school events with the Tech Club, and works with the Teens for Christ in their educational and service activities. Outside of Lakeside, her involvement and leadership includes teaching Sunday school at St. John Newville, singing in the church choir, and participating in youth group and serving at Advent and Lenten suppers. She has served as junior staff at Camp Phillip in Wautoma for the past two summers. In addition to volunteering at the public library and community theater, she also holds a part-time job at McDonald’s in Jefferson.

Katelyn Richter, ranked 10th in GPA for her class, has been on high honor roll each of her semesters, and received the Student Achiever award her sophomore year. As a member at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Watertown, she assists with service videography. At Lakeside, she has been involved athletically in volleyball for two years, and softball for three years. She also served on Student Council for two years, where she helped organize the campus blood drive. Badger State Government and Leadership Conferences are an opportunity for students entering their senior year of high school to put the principles of democratic government into action during a weeklong assembly. Sponsored by the Wisconsin American Legion and its Auxiliary, the goals of Badger State assemblies are to prepare young men and women of high school age for citizenship in a modern world, teach principles of democracy, instill a love of country and desire to preserve our government. Schools are encouraged to select representatives based on a combination of interest shown, leadership qualities, character, fitness, scholarship and extra-curricular activities.
