On Saturday, Dec. 17, Matthew Werre, 2016 graduate of Lakeside Lutheran, directed the 10 p.m. show on his own for WSAW/WZAW in Wausau, Wis. “As director, he’s responsible for setting up and running our 30-minute live news programs,” says Operations Manager Chris Johnson. “He sets up all the camera shots, mic, videos, interviews. When you watch the news, he’s the person running the show.”
This is quite the accomplishment for an 18-year-old from Sun Prairie, who started as a master control operator, running shows and commercials. “He quickly demonstrated he was a faster learner and well-organized communicator, so I moved him to directing our news broadcasts,” says Johnson, a 1993 graduate of LLHS who got his own start by producing videos for Lakeside including Cross Country and Basketball highlight videos.
“I’m not sure, but I think he’s the youngest director ever at WSAW—and it’s rare for someone his age to have this responsibility even in a smaller market like Wausau. I have no doubt Matthew’s Christian education at Lakeside has contributed to success at WSAW. His experience with video production was a major plus, but his Christian work ethic, communication skills, and hard working attitude also played a huge role,” said Johnson. “I was absolutely thrilled to be able to hire a Lakeside graduate. I hope to hire more.”
Werre, son of Pastor Luke and Jennifer Werre of Sun Prairie, will be directing the 6 pm & 10 pm Saturday newscasts and 5:30 and 10 p.m. Sunday newscasts—and others as needed. These are streamed live on www.wsaw.com, under the “What’s On” tab.
