Principal’s Pen: The engine light is on

Pastor Don Schultz is principal
of Lakeside Lutheran. Reach him at

Do you like it when the engine light in your car turns on?

I find it unsettling. Last month I was driving on the freeway between Milwaukee and Madison, and my engine light turned on. First there was the sound of the chime, and then the light started blinking. That’s not a good sign! What could it be? I don’t want to be that person stranded on the side of the freeway, especially during the winter. How long can I drive with this light on?

The engine light is unsettling, but it’s necessary. There’s something wrong, and it needs to be fixed. I’m grateful for the people who know how to make those engine lights turn off. The repair bill can be painful, but it’s better than waiting for a tow truck as you wave at all the cars that drive by.

We live in a world where the “engine light” is on, and it’s flashing! Death is present. Sin is everywhere. Problems abound. These are signs—“warning lights”—that something is wrong with this world. You don’t need to look very far to see those signs. Look at your own life, and the people you know and love, and you’ll find death and sin and problems. The world’s engine light is on. Something is wrong.

This imperfect world causes us to look for a Savior, someone who can fix these problems that we can’t fix ourselves. Jesus deals with the problem of sin, by taking away our sins at the cross. Jesus addresses the problem of death, by changing your death into the gateway to eternal life. And as you deal with all the other problems this world brings, Jesus gives you the strength and wisdom that only he can provide.

“In this world you will have trouble,” Jesus says, “but take heart, I have overcome the world.” Do you have trouble? Then go to the One who overcame the world. Let Jesus be the one you look to, and rely upon, as you navigate the many problems this world brings. ❧DS

Lakeside Lutheran announces new head football coach

Matt Doering—Photo credit: TJKWolf Productions

Lakeside Lutheran High School administration has announced that Matthew Doering has been selected to serve as the next Warrior head varsity football coach from among a sizable pool of interested faculty and non-faculty candidates. Doering will step in after longtime head coach Paul Bauer retires from both teaching and coaching at the end of the 2023/24 school year.

Doering’s 23 years of football coaching experience began when he assisted with a local high school team during his senior year of college at Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minn. Once at Lakeside, he coached a year of freshman football in 2002, then a year with JV, before moving to his current position as varsity defensive coordinator for the past 20 years. All those years have been under Bauer, whose teams have been playoff-eligible for seven years straight. “Matt has been an incredibly valuable and loyal assistant for the past 20 years,” says Bauer. “He has certainly earned the opportunity and will do a great job as Lakeside’s next head football coach.”

“I have been part of some great memories connected to Warrior Football, including a string of three conference championships from 2010-2012,” Doering shares. “We just missed a state final appearance in 2018, and there have been some great rivalries within our conference—Lake Mills and Lodi, most memorably. I am excited and humbled to have an opportunity to take over as head coach. We have great young Christian men who are growing as student-athletes and a great group of men on our coaching staff with a lot of experience in our program. I am really looking forward to the challenge of trying to get the most out of our kids and our staff.”

“We are excited to have Matt in place and taking on this role,” said Activities Director Todd Jahns in his announcement of the decision. “He, along with all of our football coaches, will carry on the tradition and ministry-minded approach of Warrior football that Coach Bauer established. We look forward to continued success on the field and in the development of our future Warrior football players with Coach Doering.”

Speaking on his vision for the future of the program, Doering says, “You won’t see a whole lot of major changes to Warrior football. I am a big believer in being who you are. Have an identity and stick to it. I also think that good things happen when you work hard to do the ordinary things better every day.”

Doering appreciates that the sports programs are an extension of the overall school mission. “The same core values that Lakeside has are a key part of Warrior football,” he says. “We have the opportunity to challenge our student-athletes to use their talents and gifts to come together as a team and channel all of their efforts towards success every time we step on the practice or game field. Wins and losses take care of themselves after that.”

Doering’s overall coaching resume includes more than football. He coached some high school baseball in college. Six years teaching at the elementary level in Arizona from 1996-2002 included coaching both boys and girls in softball, volleyball, and basketball. His first spring at Lakeside saw him in the head varsity softball coach spot, a role in which he will enter his 22nd season in spring 2024.

Holding a master’s degree in American History and Government, Doering teaches U.S. History and two required senior courses, American Government and Financial Literacy. Head of the Social Studies department and a member of the school’s educational technology committee, he also serves on the Academic Leadership Team. He’s been a Student Teaching Cooperating Teacher for Martin Luther College regularly since 2006, mentoring more than 12 future teachers in that role.

Doering and his wife, Jill, have lived in Lake Mills since 2002. Their three children, all Lakeside graduates, include Cassie (Brandon) Schilling, class of 2014; Becca (2016); and Kyle (2020). From 1996-2002, he served at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church & School in Bylas, Ariz. He continues to serve on the WELS Board for World Missions. In his free time, he especially enjoys officiating basketball, deer hunting, and family game nights.
