Class of 2023 Winters earns perfect ACT score

Isaac Winters, LL class of ’23

Lakeside Lutheran High School junior Isaac Winters, son of Jim and Kimara Winters, Watertown,  earned a perfect score on the ACT this year, joining a rare group of students who take the test nationwide and score a 36. According to the 2021 ACT National Report, just 0.313% of 1.295 million test takers earned a perfect score.

“A student like Isaac Winters is unique—even at Lakeside Lutheran,” says Principal James Grasby. “He is a combination of the best features of a student-scholar: a strong work ethic, curiosity, intuitive skill, and a desire to learn. He is involved in music, sports, and volunteer activities. Most importantly, Isaac exemplifies the principles of the Christian faith including kindness, respect, and virtue. In all he does, he lives his faith and displays the servant-leadership that our Savior lived and taught.”

Winters, a member of the class of 2023, is planning to pursue a degree in software engineering or computer science. In addition to the collegiate and scholarship benefits of earning a perfect score, Winters is enjoying a more immediate one. “I was talking to my mom about the ACT one night and she said I wasn’t taking it seriously enough, that I really needed to study for it more. I took that as a challenge and an opportunity,” says Winters. “I bet my mom that if I got a 35 or higher she would owe me a mini fridge. To my surprise, she accepted that bet. When I got the 36, we went shopping. I put it in the basement next to the TV and keep things like cheese sticks, chocolate milk, yogurt, grapes, and donuts. It’s great!”

The ACT is a curriculum-based achievement exam that measures students’ knowledge and skills in English, reading, mathematics, and science, with each section scored on a scale of 1-36. For more information, see act.org. For more information on Lakeside Lutheran, go to llhs.org.

Principal’s Pen: No pain, no gain

Reach Principal Grasby

This is a mantra to many. In spite of the good intentions behind the words, medical and exercise experts agree that the advice is neither sound nor safe.

“No pain, no gain.” However, these same words are valid and true to every Christian.

Speaking to his disciples, Jesus said, “Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve” (John 16:20). Jesus confirmed that his followers would experience real sorrow.
His betrayal, arrest, and crucifixion would stun and grieve them.

But, he also promised that eternal joy would overcome their grief. “Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy” (John 16:22).

At Easter, what do these words mean to believers? Certainly Jesus’ explanation of the cost of discipleship is true. Before our joyful resurrection, we will experience the cross’s sadness and suffering. Yet, that same cross points us to real and lasting joy. Christ’s resurrection produces life-transforming joy. Peter calls it a “new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1 Peter 1:3)

Our hope and joy center in the risen Christ. By his resurrection, that joy is ours. His resurrection declares victory over sin, death, and Satan —our joy stealers. Through Christ, we are assured that we and all believers will rise to live eternally and joyfully with him.

Even now, in the midst of earthly sorrow, Jesus offers true joy—not a vague, future promise but a living promise for today. Christ lives and comes to us through his Word. He urges us to pray to him about our struggles and temptations. In his own words, he assures us that his Father hears and answers our prayers. He said, “Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete” (John 16:24).

“No pain, no gain.” The pain that Christ endured on the cross becomes our gain by faith in him. His cross brings true Easter joy. Delight in this joy. Pray that it grows and is made complete in the lives of all believers in Jesus.

From all of us at Lakeside Lutheran, God bless your joyful Easter celebration.

Forensics Earns State Runner-Up

On Saturday, April 2, the Lakeside Lutheran High School forensics team culminated their season by participating in the WFCA (Wisconsin Forensics Coaching Association) state tournament in Eau Claire, Wis. Hundreds of students from around the state competed in nineteen categories consisting of persuasive, entertaining, informative, impromptu, and other speaking skills.

Teams are allowed up to 25 entries and are given points based on their rank against other students in each of the rounds. Lakeside Lutheran earned 2nd place in Division 3, behind Wrightstown. Division 3 consisted of high schools with enrollments up to 850 students.

This year, Lakeside transitioned from the Wisconsin High School Forensics Association contest to the WFCA. “At the WHSFA, the speakers spoke only once to get a gold, silver or bronze medal. Transitioning into the WFCA was challenging. It is a very competitive tournament that concentrated on individual achievement—some competitors spoke a total of five rounds—combined with team scores,” says Coach Steve Lauber. “It was great to see our very young team do so well among some amazing teams from all around the state.”

LLHS forensics team placed second at WFCA state competition.
